Common Meier

Following the defeat of Napoleanic War, Europe began to enjoy a period of tranquillity post 1815. Middle class European flourished with industrialisation and urbanised lifestyle, driving the change in taste and aesthetic. Highly prized mahogany furniture with elaborate designs (inspired by French Empire grandeur) was replaced with clean-lined, utilitarian style. The rise of Biedermeier ("Bieder" meaning common or everyday in German), perhaps the most evident being in interior decoration and furniture design, also impacted literature, music and visual arts until 1848. Biedermeier style furniture was simple and elegant; and influenced successive artistic endeavours of Jugendstil (Germanic countries adaptation of Art Nouveau), 1920's Art Deco and Bauhaus movements
