There was
China Machado. One of the first non-western model to walk the runways of Dior and Lanvin back in the 1960s, she has also graced fashion covers and editorials for major fashion publications like
Harper's Bazaar.
Marchado is half-Portuguese and half-Chinese who has worked as an air stewardess and did small-time modelling before famed photographer
Richard Avedon discovered her. After her modelling career, she worked as costume designer on movie sets. She is now 81 and lives in New York, close to her two children and grandchildren.
