Not many people have heard of
Isabel Toledo. Not many people know that she is a fashion designer. Or that she was born in Cuba, grew up in NYC and married her
high school sweetheart, renowned illustrator
Ruben Toledo. Or that she has won several awards for her
artistry in fashion. This is what I like about Toledo - her work, unlike the fuss-free, clean and sporty casualwear so favoured by most American mainstream designers; displays restrained intelligence mixed with timeless simplicity. I suppose this is an admirable trait, because she doesn't produce for commercial reasons and often, her clothes reflect a deep understanding between textiles, pattern considerations, hand-crafted values, proportions and aesthetic.
