Just a little detour from the couture blogs I've been doing. I came across this book "
Breaking The Mode" while I was book-browsing in uni, just as we do when we're supposed to be researching 'other things'. Anyway, it is an amazing fashion book on what was thought to be 'breakthrough' designs and textiles, in the past 3 decades. What stood out to me is some of
Issey Miyake's pleated dresses, which came about the last 80's and early 90's. While the west of the world was all about shoulder pads and punk chic, the Japanese designer was experimenting with
pleating, heat-treating and pattern cutting. The result? A new wave of avant-garde minimalism, with textile and cutting technology being key to creating interesting shapes and silhouettes.
