I will not spend half my blog writing up about
Riccardo Tisci, although he is a genius. You just have to know that this Italian-born, Central St Martin's graduate is now the head designer for Givenchy and has been doing some really good work for the fashion house. In fact, two back-to-back seasons for Givenchy's haute couture line.
Let's take
Spring 2011 Haute Couture, for example. Tisci looked to
Japan for inspiration, but not of the
Harajuku Girls or beautiful
Geishas. He was inspired by robots and
Kazuo Ohno, a deeply-revered
Butoh master. Combining these two elements, the resulting collection was romantic and melancholic. Almost like a level of restrained elaboration yet the consuming details spoke of arduous labour and exceptional craftsmanship. To me, the Butoh's concept of 'control versus uncontrolled' has translated into these very beautiful garments which every detail was painfully consuming, carefully exercised in aesthetics and execution
