The first semester of my degree programme culminated in the presentation of 2 eveningwear pieces, titled "Marie Antoinette". The collection was actually inspired by a pale blue-green jacquard fabric which I found at The Dancing Queen, Richmond. I felt like I had to tie the inspiration back to something more make-believe and substantial (as opposed to "I just love this fabric I saw" which will sound shallow and unoriginal to the assessment panel).
Somehow, the image that came to mind each time I see this fabric was the soft furnishing of the very opulent Baroque era. Pastel, intricate motif, rich contrast between the lustrous weaved pattern against a matte cotton base. And who could represent more opulence than Marie Antoinette herself, the queen of fashion of the Baroque era?
