Ballet Russes

It has inspired many for many years. I dare say it will continue to inspire for many years to come. I think that was what Sergei Diaghilev set out to do and he has done it brilliantly. Founded in Paris in 1909, the Ballet Russes employed young talented Russian dancers, who exiled from their homeland due to the Revolution. The troupe was highly noted for the innovative performances which brought together successful artistic collaborations from set designs to revolutionary, quality dance techniques. With choreographer greats like Mikhail Fokine and Marius Petipa at helm, the company performed sets that include design inputs from the who's who of the arts world including Picasso, Matisse, Chanel, Stravinsky, Dali, Bakst and Miro.

These fabulous costumes, a collection of 140 pieces from 34 productions currently resides at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
