Each time I talk to Milo, just behind him I find
Butterfly Hu smiling demurely at me with her feline eyes. Born in Shanghai in 1908,
Butterfly Hu or
Hu Die was the first actress to star in the earliest non-silent Chinese movies. Formally trained as an actress in The China Film School, she rose to fame in the 1930s through to the 40s before retiring in 1967. Often compared to her contemporary
Ruan Lingyu who took her own life at 24, Hu's phenomenon success included Burning of The Red Lotus Temple, The White Tower, The Songstress Red Peony (
first Chinese talking film) and Twin Sisters. After her very successful career, famously dubbed as The Chinese Movie Queen, she spent her last years in Canada with her husband and family.
