Frida La La La

Two days ago, someone asked me about my favourite painter and I could not come up with the answer. For a good 5 minutes. How odd because how can I forget about Frida? Initially, I loved Frida because she's a woman. Feminist. Girl power. Quite a (shallow) justification, huh?

But hold your thoughts. It's not that simple. Frida Kahlo was not just that simple, as a person and as an artist. What I love about Frida, although personally am not a fan of bright bold use of colours or surrealist art per se, is how she expresses her emotions through her paintings. What she was trying to say, was very personal (to her own self) and yet universal (to many of us) at the same time - pain and suffering, hope versus pessimism, the desire to love and be loved, battling with own demons. Sometimes, we find it very hard to express our deepest and darkest thoughts for a number of reasons but what I sometimes cannot do in words, Frida had done it in painting. So I find meaning in that.

My favourite work by Frida Kahlo - "My birth"
Diego in my thoughts - Frida Kahlo
Girl in death mask - Frida Kahlo
Henry Ford Hospital - Frida Kahlo
The broken column - Frida Kahlo
The wounded deer - Frida Kahlo
The love embrace - Frida Kahlo
The two Fridas - Frida Kahlo
Tree of hope - Frida Kahlo
Without hope - Frida Kahlo
Explanation (not analysis) of her painting can be found here
