Princess Of Light And Darkness

If I have to pick a favourite Australian designer, without a doubt it will be Gail Sorronda. Born Gail Reid, the Brisbane-based designer graduated from QUT with a degree in fine arts (fashion design) after a short but fruitful stint in architecture. She launched her own label after winning the Mercedez-Benz Start Up Award with her debut (also her graduation) collection titled "Angel At My Table". She shuttles between Paris and Australia as her label is now stocked internationally.

What I l-o-v-e about Sorronda:
Often incorporating organza in her garments, her restrained colour palette of black and white and choice of fabric often create spectacular silhouettes which is sculptured yet soft at the same time. Her manipulation of folds, pleats and ruffles result in a visual aesthetic that is amazing against the light. Quite a play on shadows and spaces. The result: softly sculptured, romantic, fluid, youthful and contemporary.

It is a shame that I cannot get hold of images from her first two collections "Angel At My Table" and "Riders Of The Storm". They have been archived from her website. They remain to be one of the most vivid collections I've seen in a while, in Australian fashion. These are from her Spring 2010 "Invasive Exotic" collection:
