Not long ago, I wrote about Christophe De Carnin's departure from the house of
Balmain. French-born, ESMOD-educated De Carnin was the creative director for Balmain since 2005. When it was announced that he had resigned amongst rumours of mental health issues and business disputes, we were kept guessing for awhile. Yesterday, Balmain has announced that they are appointing the head designer for womenswear,
Olivier Rousteing to succeed De Carnin.
Previously with Roberto Cavalli and joined Balmain in 2009, Rousteing brought a young, funky, sophisticated rock and roll look to the Balmain women - slim hip-slinging pants, embellished jackets, studded mini dresses. It has been very well received - if I may point out that in SS2009, big shoulder pads in slim-line tailored jacket was all the rage and we have Rousteing to thank for that

No doubt, he has talent and a great sense of style, making Balmain young and fresh again. But after seasons of seeing that (same) rock chick strutting down the Balmain catwalk, I'm actually getting a little bored and waiting for something else. Something unexpected. Something out of the box. Something not so rock but wow nonetheless.
